Can You Stop Granite Countertops from Fading?

Granite is one of the more popular materials for countertops and kitchen islands, thanks to its natural durability and sleek aesthetics. While these countertops tend to last longer than other materials, they are not invulnerable to fading – even when they’re treated with resins.

Prolonged exposure to sunlight is something that your granite countertops may have to endure, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do anything about fading.

Keep the Countertops Clean

The resin that’s infused in the granite may give the countertop increased sunlight tolerance, but they may weaken if the surface is always damp and wet. Make it a point to clean the countertops after use, making sure to wipe them clean and dry

Replace the Sealant

Natural stone countertops have a sealant that protects the structure from water damage, but it gets worn down eventually – either by constant exposure to water or sunlight. You can tell if the sealant is no longer working if water no longer forms into beads on the surface and instead gets absorbed into the countertop immediately.

Granite dealers like us recommend you replace the granite sealing if this is the case. Fortunately, you can do this on your own as countertops sealants are readily available at your local hardware store.

Keep the Blinds Closed

Even with strong glass coatings, sunlight will still find its way into the kitchen and hasten the fading of your countertops. Make it a point to keep the blinds closed during peak sunlight hours or when you’re not using the kitchen.
