Countertops are essential for a kitchen or bathroom. Not only can they serve as a place where you can store your items, but they also make a great focal point for the rooms. However, they’re only a good focal point if you maintain them properly. Unfortunately, some homeowners sometimes neglect maintaining their countertops as they aren’t certain how to do so.

Marble Countertops

When you’re cleaning marble countertops, wipe them down with a damp soft cloth to prevent streaking and water spots from forming. If a deeper clean is required, use a pH-neutral dishwashing liquid mixed with warm water. If your marble countertops are stained, however, your marble countertops may require professional buffing. When trying to determine if your countertops need to be sealed, meanwhile, use a water droplet test. If the drops spread, experts recommend that you use a product to seal your marble countertop for protection.

Laminate Countertops

To clean laminate countertops, wipe them down with warm, soapy water and a mild bleach solution or a non-abrasive kitchen cleaner. However, be sure to test the bleach in an inconspicuous spot first to determine if it will stain or cause surface damage. When removing stains, meanwhile, let a baking soda paste sit on the surface for a few minutes before you wipe it down and rinse it with water. To remove grease buildup, on the other hand, use a kitchen cleaner or a vinegar and water solution. Unlike marble, laminate countertops don’t require sealing.

Granite Countertops

As for cleaning granite countertops, wipe and rinse its surface with warm, soapy water, and avoid using abrasive cleaners as they can cause scratches. To remove stains, apply a baking soda paste, cover it with plastic wrap, and let it sit overnight before wiping it up with warm water and a soft cloth. If needed, perform the water droplet test again to determine if your countertops need to be sealed. 

Stainless Steel Countertops

Of the four, stainless steel is the easiest to clean. Simply remove the smudges with stainless steel cleaners or soap and water. Avoid letting the water sit too long, however, as it can cause spots to appear. While stainless steel can resist stains, it can be susceptible to rust marks. To remove these marks, use a mild abrasive cleaner or a mixture of homemade lemon juice and baking soda paste. Like laminate countertops, this kind of countertop does not require sealing.
