Particleboard vs. Plywood: The Differences

When it comes to getting custom kitchen cabinets, homeowners always have a choice on what materials they wish to use in its construction. Oftentimes, you can choose between particleboard and plywood. However, some homeowners have a hard time choosing between the two as they aren’t certain which material will work best.

Plywood

Most people consider plywood the better material when it comes to kitchen cabinet construction. This is because plywood has superior longevity since it holds screws and other mechanical fasteners more efficiently and can better resist pulling forces and side to side movement due to superior tensile and shearing properties. Apart from that, plywood also weighs less than particleboard, making it a better material to work with if you plan to make large hanging cabinets.

Particleboard

While plywood has its own advantages, it doesn’t mean particleboard doesn’t have its benefits as well. In fact, particleboard has greater dimensional stability, meaning it won’t warp due to temperature fluctuations. It’s also a more cost-effective option than plywood as it’s often made of wood scraps, allowing homeowners to save around 8% to 12% on cabinetry costs.

Which Material Should You Choose

If you don’t mind paying a little extra, and you have plans to hang the cabinets, then plywood might be the better choice for you. However, if you’re looking for a cost-effective option, then consider using particleboard instead as it is possible to make it work as well as plywood.
